The Château des Moyeux was built in 1848 on the foundations
of an old hunting castle, owned by General
La Fayette’s
elder daughter, Anastasie, who was married to Marquis
de la Tour-Maubourg from 1801 to 1846.
It was inhabited by Eléonore
Vergeot, mistress of Napoleon III who gave him 2 children.
On July, 13th 1872, the castle was bought by Hubert Debrousse ,
a rich civil engineering contractor. The fortune of the
family will be left to the welfare services, a new hospital
will be built in Paris, thanks to these donations (Hospice
Debrousse), a foundation will also be created (Fondation
Debrousse) which will help Pierre and Marie Curie finance
their experiments.
Later on Madame Rigaud took over the
ownership as she was managing the family perfume company.
Forty gardeners took care of the gardens and greenhouses
for sparse flowers which were needed for the development
of the sophisticated perfumes.
Thus one of the towers of
the park was used as emblem of the well known scented candles
Rigaud.
